RISING STAR OF THE YEAR - MICHELLE BYERS
INTERGROOM’S Some major changes were made with our contest structure this year as far as the Groomer of the Year Competition. The decision was made to combine the international groomers and the American groomers into the same classes this year. A great deal of thought went into this change. We have had separate classes for over 20 years and heard from many Europeans and Canadians that they really wished to compete directly with the American Groomer. In light of this, we carefully selected our Judges to be sure each pair included a Judge with a complete working knowledge of European styling. We also expanded our Class placements to include a 4th Place Win. With so many top groomers competing in each class, we wanted to be sure that 4 contestants would be able to win both medals and money. With this change, we also had to change the manner of selection of the Best American Groomer and the Best International Groomer. These were done by the “point system” this year, and tabulated by our Contest Coordinator Susan Pratt together with Shirlee Kalstone, founder of INTERGROOM. Along with this change, and the addition of the Rising Star Competition, we extended our competition over Saturday and Sunday. We also changed the manner in which prizes were awarded. Class placements were announced at the end of each class. To the delight of those in attendance at the Sunday Evening Banquet, our 6 Gold Medal Winners were presented to the audience with lights and music – and the INTERNATIONAL GROOMER OF THE YEAR selected by our Best in Show Judge Bea van Zanten, from the Netherlands. There were 78 dogs entered in this competition this year, with competitors coming from all over the United States, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Italy, Mexico, & Russia. Each competitor received a special commemorative INTERGROOM COMPETITION rosette plus, new this year, a specially designed personalized certificate of participation. Almost $20,000 in cash and prizes were given to contestants in this very special annual competition, thanks to our very generous sponsors. CLASS:

OSTER INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS The ninth annual Oster International Tournament of Champions, organized by Shirlee Kalstone, took place on Sunday afternoon, April 29th. Twenty five of the world’s most winning groomers from the United States, Canada, Italy, France, the Czech Republic and Russia took part in the competition. The Judges were: Elizabeth Paul from the United States (last year’s Tournament Champion), Jean-François Vanaken of Belgium, and Elly Geisbers of the Netherlands. The contest area at Intergroom was greatly enlarged this year and this resulted in a very large stage and runway. To make their final deliberations even more thorough, the judges decided to take advantage of the spaciousness to evaluate the different breeds of dogs by posing them together on the runway. First, all the Standard Poodles were lined-up for one last look by the judges, followed by all the Miniature and Toy Poodles, the Bichons Frises, all the Spaniels and, finally, all the Terriers. Then each contestant was introduced and asked to move his or her dog separately on the runway.
Colin Taylor, also from the Dog Works, Newark, Deleware, was named the 2001 World Tournament Champion. Colin, who groomed a Bedlington Terrier, won $4,000. in cash and a walnut book trophy with gold medal that was created especially for the Champion. |
